At ARCTIC Health Centre, our story is founded on compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering dedication to improving the health and lives of those we serve. We are proud of our history in supporting First Responders, the Canadian Armed Forces, and Veterans in their recovery from traumatic psychological injuries, and we are now expanding our expertise to offer high-quality care to the public. We welcome all individuals, regardless of background or origin, and are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

As an interdisciplinary health center, we provide comprehensive mental health and addiction care through a team of skilled professionals. With a combined experience of over 170 years, our team is highly trained and deeply compassionate in delivering specialized care.

Each team member brings unique expertise from diverse fields such as addictions, mental health, forensic psychiatry, mood disorders, personality disorders, trauma, stress-related conditions, and intergenerational trauma. We take a tailored, client-centred approach to care, recognizing and addressing each individual's complex and varied needs to best support their recovery and well-being.
We also understand the unique challenges First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities face in accessing healthcare. At ARCTIC Health Centre, we are committed to providing culturally sensitive care that honours these communities' traditions while addressing their distinct health needs.

Dr. Madhavan Das
MD, Consultant Psychiatrist
Specialty: Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
Dr. Das is a distinguished forensic and addiction specialist psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience in the UK and Canada. His career includes roles in correctional facilities, inpatient hospitals, outpatient treatment programs, and teaching at the University of Alberta's medicine program.
Specializing in the assessment and management of complex mental health and substance use disorders, Dr. Das utilizes psychodynamic therapy to uncover underlying emotional factors while incorporating evidence-based treatments. He strongly emphasizes family involvement in treatment to enhance recovery outcomes and promote lasting change.

A passionate advocate for First Nations and Métis communities, Dr. Das offers culturally sensitive care and designs programs that integrate traditional healing practices with modern therapeutic approaches. Committed to evidence-based best practices, research, and education, he regularly lectures on forensic psychiatry, addiction medicine, and psychodynamic therapy, earning widespread recognition for his significant contributions in these fields.

Dr. Alec Oskin
MD, Consultant Psychiatrist
Specialty: Youth Forensic Psychiatry, Youth Psychotherapy
Dr. Oskin is a highly accomplished Youth Psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience in mental health, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. With extensive experience across various clinical settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and residential treatment centers, Dr. Oskin has expertise in areas such as mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, trauma, and early-onset psychosis.
Throughout his career, Dr. Oskin has remained dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care, working collaboratively with families, schools, and multidisciplinary teams to promote the mental well-being of young people. In addition to his clinical practice, he has played a key role in developing innovative treatment programs that integrate traditional psychiatric care with emerging therapeutic approaches to address the complex needs of youth.
Dr. Oskin is also an active contributor to research and education. He has authored numerous publications on child and adolescent mental health and presented at national and international conferences. His unwavering commitment to advancing the field has earned him widespread recognition as a leader in youth psychiatry.

Dr. Voytek Czernikiewicz
MD, FRCPC, Consultant Psychiatrist
Specialty: Trauma Treatment, Psychotherapy
Dr. Czernikiewicz is a highly skilled psychiatrist with over 15 years of experience specializing in general and trauma psychiatry. His expertise was honed during specialty training at the University of Alberta and McMaster University. He further advanced his career by providing Emergency Psychiatry services at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, and offering psychiatric consultation and liaison services at Oakville Hospital, part of Halton Healthcare.

Currently, Dr. Czernikiewicz serves as a Psychiatric Consultant with the Department of National Defence at the Canadian Forces Base in Edmonton. Known for his compassionate and effective care, he specializes in the assessment, treatment, and medication management of traumatic psychological injuries. He is particularly dedicated to supporting Canadian military personnel through evidence-based interventions, therapeutic approaches, and specialized care for trauma-related conditions. Dr. Czernikiewicz has a passion for medical treatments and a deep interest in pain management, further enhancing his holistic approach to patient care

Dr. Kurian Jones
MD, MRCP, FRCPC
Specialty: Cancer Specialist, Early Cancer Screening
Dr. Kurian Jones is a highly respected psychiatrist specializing in cancer care, with over 20 years of experience in addressing the psychological and emotional challenges of cancer diagnosis and treatment. He currently provides comprehensive mental health support at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton through Alberta Health Services, helping individuals and families navigate the complex emotional landscape of cancer.
Dr. Jones works closely with interdisciplinary cancer care teams, including oncologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, to create holistic treatment plans that address mental and physical health needs. His expertise includes managing treatment-related stress, anxiety, depression, and adjustment disorders, with a strong focus on enhancing patients' quality of life throughout their cancer journey.
Dr. Jones is renowned for his compassionate and empathetic approach and is committed to providing kind and personalized care. He is passionate about offering culturally aware cancer screening services for Indigenous communities, ensuring that care is sensitive to cultural needs. Dana
BSc RN, Nurse Practitioner
Specialty: Addiction prescribing
Dana is a compassionate and skilled Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience specializing in mental health care and addiction treatment. At a mental health clinic, she provides patient-centred support for individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, offering comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and medication management to promote stability and well-being.
As an experienced outpatient detox prescriber, Dana specializes in the safe and effective detoxification of substance use disorders, helping clients navigate the challenges of recovery with personalized care. Renowned for her empathetic approach, she collaborates with psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and social workers to develop tailored treatment plans that address each client’s unique needs.
She is deeply committed to client education, empowering individuals to better understand their conditions, medications, and coping strategies on their path to recovery. Passionate about creating a safe and supportive space, Dana ensures clients feel heard, respected, and cared for, helping them build resilience, improve their mental health, and enhance their overall quality of life.

Dr. Claude Shema
MD. Msc. PsyD. MRCPsych.( UK)-Clinical psychology and psychiatric consultant
Specialty: Psychotherapy
Dr. Claude Shema is a diverse clinician in brain disease and mental health disorders, with training and experience in tropical medicine, psychiatry, clinical psychology and neurosurgery. He is highly skilled in group therapy, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, addictions, and mental health care, offering evidence-based, holistic treatment approaches tailored to his patients’ unique needs.

Dr. Shema’s areas of expertise include neurodevelopmental psychopathology, rTMS therapy for medication-resistant psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorders, forensic psychiatry, conduct disorder, antisocial personality disorder, neurosurgery ( intracranial and spinal cord), neuropsychiatry, and clinical research in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.
As the Lead clinician in hospitals, private practice settings and education institutions such as Yellowhead Tribal College, Dr. Shema has worked extensively with Indigenous communities in Alberta and British Columbia, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba providing culturally sensitive care focused on trauma and intergenerational trauma.

Dr. Shema is also deeply involved in addictions, neurosurgery, psychiatry, public health, and trans-cultural psychiatry. As a regular TV and media contributor, he shares valuable insights into the brain and behaviour, offering expert perspectives on mental health and psychological well-being. Committed to compassionate, culturally attuned, and trauma-informed care, Dr. Shema helps individuals overcome mental health challenges, leading them toward balanced, fulfilling lives.

Dr. Sherry-Anne Muscat
PhD, Psychology
Specialization: Psychological assessment, Indigenous therapy, First Responders and Military
Dr. Sherry-Anne Muscat is a Registered Psychologist with a PhD in Integral and Transpersonal Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. She is a licensed psychologist in Alberta and works full-time in Youth Forensic Psychiatry at Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. In her role, Dr. Muscat conducts inpatient forensic and neuropsychological assessments for court, including assessments for IRCS sentences aimed at reducing recidivism in violent offenders. She is also part of a multidisciplinary team providing treatment for high-risk youth involved in the justice system with concurrent mental health disorders.
In addition, Dr. Muscat serves as the psychotherapist for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy at NeuroClinics, a community-based psychiatry clinic. She is a certified EMDRIA therapist specializing in trauma-informed therapy.
Dr. Muscat is a dedicated service provider in her private practice, working with organizations such as Indigenous Services Canada, the First Nations Inuit Health Benefit, Indian Residential School Survivors, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. She also works with the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Regional Council, Alberta Medical Association's Physician and Family Support, Alberta Child and Family Services, Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, and Veteran Affairs. Dr. Muscat is a clinical consultant for the CreeAtion Community Care Society and the Tawow Acimowin Group Care, supporting First Nation youth with complex needs

Calvin Haws

Director: Services and Programs
Specialty: Occupational Therapy, trauma, return to work
Calvin Haws is a distinguished occupational therapist with over 35 years of expertise, renowned for his compassionate approach and dedication to rehabilitation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Rehabilitation Medicine in Occupational Therapy.
Calvin spent over thirty years with the Alberta Workers Compensation Board, excelling in front-line and leadership roles. His work profoundly impacted patients and colleagues. Cal was also a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta for many years, where he played a vital role in educating and shaping many occupational therapists.
Passionate about advancing the field, Calvin has co-authored four peer-reviewed research papers and spearheaded innovative rehabilitation programs for mild traumatic brain injury, traumatic psychological injury, and chronic psychological injury. His unwavering commitment to Return to Work programs underscores his belief in effective recovery for workers and employers alike. Widely recognized as a leader in his field, Calvin combines unparalleled experience with genuine care to empower individuals on their journey to recovery and reintegration.

Filip Stanic
Master of Arts Counselling Psychology (MACP)

Filip holds a master’s degree in counselling psychology from Yorkville University. Bringing over 12 years of experience in Social Services, Filip has worked extensively with children, youth, and families in crisis, and now focuses his practice on supporting adults through challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and burnout, coping with change, life transitions, grief, perfectionism, and self-esteem​.
​
Filip provides a client-centred approach, offering personalized support tailored to individual needs. He employs a variety of practical tools from multiple treatment models and works collaboratively with clients to develop a plan that aligns with their goals. A safe and respectful space is at the core of Filip’s practice, ensuring clients feel genuinely heard throughout their therapeutic journey.
Filip utilizes various therapeutic methods, including Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Culturally Sensitive Approaches, Humanistic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Techniques, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). He offers counselling services for women, men, neurodiverse individuals, and those in the LGBTQIA2S+ community and is dedicated to helping individuals build resilience, overcome obstacles, and achieve lasting well-being.

Outside of work, Filip enjoys spending time with his family and values the simple joys of life.

Shawn Meier
BA, BSW, RSW
Centre Director
Specialty: Trauma, intergenerational trauma, mental health, and addictions
Shawn Meier brings over 25 years of expertise in addiction and mental health services, spanning government, NGO, and private healthcare sectors. His extensive clinical experience includes psychiatry, forensics, corrections, and return-to-work programs in inpatient and outpatient settings, including hospitals and residential facilities.
Shawn has worked with military personnel, law enforcement, paramedics, and firefighters through the NHS (UK), Alberta Health Services, Occutrauma, and large private organizations. As a proud Métis, he incorporates Dakota traditions into his trauma-focused treatment approach. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Religion and a Bachelor of Social Work degree. He is currently completing a master’s in psychology. A registered social worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers, Shawn was a department head and instructor for the Yellowhead Tribal College social work program. He has also designed national and international clinics and programs addressing trauma, stress-related disorders, intergenerational trauma, addictions, and mental health.
